September 8 -- Feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos
...or as it is called in the West, the Feast of the Nativity of Mary, or the Feast of the Birth of the Virgin. It is among the score or more days dedicated to the BVM (Blessed Virgin Mary) in the Roman calendar, but also one of the Twelve Great Feasts of the Eastern Orthodox calendar.
The tradition says that Mary was born to aged, childless parents named Joachim and Anna. She was born sixteen or seventeen years before Jesus, creating one of the favorite images of a pastor I know -- the pregnant teenage girl who needs a little help on a cold winter night.
Not a whole lot needs to be said about this, but if you want the account of a home-school celebration of the Birth of the BVM that's shown in the photo, go to this link.
